Message From The CWL - St. Maurice Parish

St. Maurice Catholic Women’s League, agents of change for the protection of human life from conception to natural death.

This week, May 4 to 10, is designated as the week to protect life as well as the National Hospice and Palliative Care Week. The Catholic Women’s League (CWL) has long been involved in advocating for and supporting palliative care as part of its mission to uphold the dignity of life from conception to natural death.

Here at St. Maurice, we have been involved in bringing awareness to our parish on these important issues. We have conducted letter-writing campaigns to elected officials to advocate for improved palliative care and to ensure that palliative care is accessible and fully integrated into the health care system. Our St. Maurice council recently ran the Horizons of Hope toolkit on end-of-life and palliative care, reinforcing our Catholic values. Discussions led to crafting concrete ways to be a compassionate community of care for our parishioners faced with life-threatening illness.

Good, accessible, and well-trained professionals in palliative care is the answer, not medical assistance in dying (MAiD; euthanasia). “Palliative care is an expression of the truly human attitude of taking care of one another, especially of those who suffer. It is a testimony that the human person is always precious, even if marked by illness and old age.” - Pope Francis

As women of faith, we have confidence that our prayers raised to God, as well as the intercession by our Mother Mary, will inspire change in our society to protect the most vulnerable.

Will you join us in the 12 Hours of Prayer for Palliative Care on Thursday, May 8th? This has been a yearly initiative, spearheaded by the national CWL and has been adopted by the St. Maurice council for the past 10 years. We are asking for a commitment of 1 hour within the hours of 7:00 am to 7:00 pm on May 8th, to pray unceasingly for greater advocacy for palliative/hospice care. Please contact Maureen Farnand at

jmfarnand@gmail.com if you can join us. The following link provides meditations and intentions to use in your prayer time: https://www.cwl.ca/12-hours-of-prayer-for-palliative-care-kit-2025/

Pope Francis reminds us, “Let us not underestimate the power of so many voices united in prayer.”
